This book is the catalog for the current exhibition at the Frick Collection, which will later travel to the National Gallery in Washington. It is not a complete Picasso drawing retrospective, since it only covers the first 30 years of the Spanish master's career - a somewhat arbitrary segmentation (1923 might have been a better decision, since it marked the last year of Picasso's so-called "return to classicism")- yet it is undoubtedly a gem of a book and it shows in all its depth and richness Picasso's virtuosity and inventiveness. From the very early drawings by a fledgling artist (academic nude studies) to the revolutionary cubist figures and on to the Ingres-inspired pencils on paper of the late 1910's (a wonderful portrait of Vollard is an absolute knockout), we are treated to all the facets of a sizzling talent, with wonderful illustrations accompanied by an in-depth study of each work present in the show. The quality of the reproductions is outstanding and it is also worth noting that, among the hundreds of books published on Picasso, this is one of the very few that focuses on his works on paper (whether gouaches or drawings). Picasso, before being a great painter, was one of the greatest draftsmen in the history of art, along with da Vinci and Ingres, and for those who did not know that, this book will serve as a revelation.Highly recommended as one of the best artbooks published in 2011, in my opinion.
